An ethnicity or ethnic group is a group of individuals who identify with one another based on perceived common characteristics that set them apart from other groups. Language, culture, shared heritage, customs, society, religion, history, and social treatment are all attributes that ethnicities might share with one another. Ethnicities are preserved by long-term endogamy and can have a small or broad range of genetic heritage, with some groups having mixed ancestry. Ethnicity is frequently used synonymously with nation, especially in circumstances of ethnic nationalism. It is also used synonymously with race, however, not all ethnicities identify as racial groupings.
